The 2014 Winter Park Yearbook has been getting a lot of press this month for all of the wrong reasons by the Orlando Sentinel, Orlando Weekly, several local news stations, and Randy Noles, the group publisher of Orlando Life Magazine. The yearbook is a grammatical nightmare and an embarrassment to the students of Winter Park High School.

My observation of the yearbook from what I have seen thus far is that it appears that there was some procrastination on the part of the yearbook staff with missed deadlines and the finished product was ugly. I don’t think it was a problem of grammar checks or editing but just an inability of putting in the time that was needed to put together a good product and it shows. In essence, the yearbook looks like it was thrown together at the last minute.

The silver lining to the members of the yearbook staff this year is that they will all have learned a valuable lesson that when you don’t do what you have committed to do as a team and as a staff, the consequences can be embarrassing. Many of the same students will be heading off to college some day and more mistakes will be made along the way during their academic and transformative years. In many ways, that is a lot of what high school and college is all about with making mistakes and learning from them. Just remember that if a similar product was produced in the real world for a publisher or for an advertising agency as a finished product, the entire staff would be fired.
